Around The World: Riders Add Two Through Global Draft

As tradition, before the CFL Draft can take place, the Global draft must commence the morning of, with the Saskatchewan Roughriders selecting defensive lineman Tyrone Taleni and punter Jordy Sandy.

Taleni was selected third overall in the first round out of USC by the Green and White.

Over the past two seasons as a Trojan, the Samoan recorded 36 tackles, eight tackles for loss, six sacks and one forced fumble across 22 games. Also, the six-foot-two, 280-pound lineman was named to the All-Pac-12  Second-Team in 2022.

Before USC, the Savai’i, Western Samoa native played two seasons at Kansas State, tallying five tackles, two tackles for loss and two sacks.

Sandy was selected 12th overall in the second round out of TCU by the Riders.

Over his five seasons as a Horned Frog, the Australian made 261 punts, totalling 10,611 yards with a 40.7-yard average per kick. Across 61 career games, 91 of the Traralgon, Australia native’s punts were dropped inside the 20-yard line and 35 were booted for more than 50 yards. 

The six-foot-three, 215-pound specialist was named to the All-Big 12 Second Team in 2020 and was an All-Big 12 Honourable Mention in both 2022 and 2023
