Former Texas A&M WR Caleb Eagans Could Light Up The CFL

If you haven’t heard the name Caleb Eagans….you’re in for a pleasant surprise. Caleb is a two sport athlete who attended Texas A&M after growing up in a small town in Texas. Caleb has always been an athlete, so seeing him compete at this level, is likely not all that big of a surprise given what he was able to accomplish in high school and college.

Growing up in Jewett, Texas, Eagans played four different sports in high school. Football, Basketball, Baseball, and of course ran Track given his other-worldly speed. Caleb has stated in past interviews: “I thought that I was going to go to college to play basketball” however sometimes life has different plans.

While he received some interest to play basketball it quickly became apparent, colleges viewed him as a better fit on the gridiron, or running track. He wound up signing with Texas A&M on a track scholarship, before walking on to the football team in 2014. As a freshman the coaches immediately saw a fit for him in the return game, and as a slot receiver. It wasn’t long before Eagans was playing in front of NFL scouts for Texas A&M.

When he signed with the school, it was just after watching Johnny Manziel, and Mike Evans make the leap to the NFL. Kevin Sumlin, now head coach of the Houston Gamblers in the USFL, of course being the amazing recruiter he was used his new found 1st round pedigree to lure players to the school. Sumlin was a big factor in Eagans choosing to play football for A&M. He would end up playing alongside Myles Garrett, Armanti Watts, and Donovan Wilson during his time there.

That’s when life brought him back down to earth. His mother was diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer in February of 2015. His second season with Texas A&M. By September the Cancer had spread and ultimately took his mother from him, much before her time. Caleb is quick to point to his mom as his biggest supporter throughout his career to this point. At this point Caleb much like most would set football aside and focused on his family, knowing he needed them and vice versa more than he needed football right now. This time away from the game helped him realize just how much he missed the game, and how good he truly was.

During his time away it took him quite a while to find his passion for football again, the former four sport athlete couldn’t even stand to pick up a ball for a stretch. Yet here we are just under 6 years later, and Caleb not only found his way back to a football field, but he finds himself in the NFL Draft Pool.

Eagans had pointed to many people who pushed him back to football, but ultimately it was again his mother that made the decision for him. It was his mother’s dream to see him graduate college, and Caleb simply refused to let his mother down. So he wound up walking on at East Central Oklahoma….a school that has a history of poaching former Texas A&M student athletes when they become available.

The Dallas Cowboys fan, however didn’t stop there. He would ultimately attend two more schools before the end of his collegiate career. A career that saw him show his abilities as a track star, power lifter, receiver, and return man. A career that began in 2014, but didn’t come to a close until 2022.

Eagans now sets his sights on the NFL draft, however if his winding journey stands in the way and NFL teams do not select him in the NFL draft, I implore you as a CFL fan, please go snatch this guy up.

Caleb Eagans found success in college for several reasons, but most of all it was due to his work ethic. Every morning at 5 am he is up and beginning his work outs for the day. He doesn’t shut it down for the day until long after others have called it quits on their day of work. Eagans has thrown himself into the game of football, and is looking for an opportunity to show exactly what he is capable of in the professional game.

Anytime a player can compete at a National Level in track, power lifting, and manage to put up a 4.19 40 yard dash in work-outs deserves to be playing professionally. Whether it’s the CFL or the NFL I’m excited to see how professional staffs employ his speed, and ability in open space. Some players just pop on tape and make it apparent they would dominate in certain forms of the game, and I for one believe if Eagans were ever to grace a CFL roster, the league would have no choice but to take notice.

I began writing years ago out of an obsession with the NFL. I never intended to take it anywhere but after watching so many others succeed as freelance writers I decided it was worth a shot. I jumped I and have loved every minute of it. I have expanded my content to include YouTube, as well as Twitter Spaces, SoundCloud, and should be launching on Amazon Podcasts soon.
