How to Bet on the CFL in All Canadian Provinces

The Canadian Football League runs from June through November, and each province has its own system for handling wagers on the games. Some provinces operate through a single government platform. Others allow private companies to compete for your business. The rules about who can bet, where they can bet, and how old they have to be depend entirely on which province you call home.

Bill C-218 changed federal law in 2021, allowing provinces to authorize single-game sports betting. Before that, Canadians had to place parlay bets, combining multiple games into one wager. The new law handed control to provincial governments, and each one built a different structure. Knowing your province’s setup matters if you want to place money on a Roughriders game or the Grey Cup.

Provincial Licensing and Where to Place CFL Wagers

Each province controls which operators can accept bets from residents within its borders. Ontario allows dozens of private operators to compete for bettors, while British Columbia and Manitoba funnel all action through PlayNow.com. Quebec runs its own system under Loto-Quebec, and the Atlantic provinces share Pro•Line through their regional lottery corporation. Alberta permits betting through its provincial lottery and sportsbooks licensed to operate in Alberta, giving residents access to CFL odds during the season.

The legal betting age also differs. Quebec sets the minimum at 18, while other provinces require bettors to be 19 before placing any wager.

Ontario’s Open Market

Ontario launched its regulated online market on April 4, 2022, making it the first province to allow private operators. The regulator, iGaming Ontario, currently oversees 48 licensed commercial operators running more than 80 approved gambling sites. This means Ontario residents have the widest selection of platforms for CFL betting in the country.

ToonieBet holds a partnership with the CFL as an Official Sports Betting and Casino Partner and operates as an Official Authorized Gaming Operator in Ontario. Bettors can compare odds across multiple operators, look for promotional offers, and choose platforms based on their preferences for user interface or bet types.

The provincial government still collects revenue from all licensed operators. Residents must be 19 or older to place bets.

British Columbia’s Single Platform

British Columbia maintains a single-operator system. PlayNow.com is the only provincially regulated sports betting option in the province. The BC Lottery Corporation runs the site, and it offers betting options on CFL games throughout the season.

The platform has an official connection to the league. The CFL and BCLC partnered to make PlayNow Sports the official sports betting partner of the 111th Grey Cup. This means residents betting through PlayNow will see CFL-specific promotions and betting markets tied directly to league events.

Without competition from private operators, BC bettors work within the odds and markets that PlayNow sets. The minimum age is 19.

Manitoba’s Approach

Manitoba uses PlayNow.com as its primary legal sports betting platform. Residents aged 18 and older can place wagers on CFL games and other major leagues through the site. The platform is managed through the Manitoba Liquor and Lotteries Corporation.

The province has not opened its market to private operators in the same way Ontario has. Bettors in Manitoba have one regulated option, and the platform covers standard bet types including moneylines, point spreads, and totals for CFL matchups.

Quebec’s Distinct System

Quebec operates through Loto-Quebec’s platform, called Mise-o-Jeu. The provincial lottery corporation manages all legal sports betting in the province, and the platform offers CFL wagering during the season.

Quebec has the lowest legal betting age in Canada at 18 years old. Every other province sets the minimum at 19. This one-year difference can matter for younger bettors who live near provincial borders or who move between provinces during the football season.

Mise-o-Jeu functions as a monopoly within Quebec, similar to how PlayNow operates in BC and Manitoba.

Atlantic Canada

New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, and Newfoundland and Labrador share a sports betting system through the Atlantic Lottery Corporation. Pro•Line is the platform name, and it offers single-game wagers on major leagues including the CFL.

Before federal law changed, Pro•Line required parlay bets. Now residents in all four Atlantic provinces can place single-game bets on CFL games. The betting age is 19 across the region.

The shared system means Atlantic Canadians have consistent rules and access regardless of which province they reside in.

Alberta and Saskatchewan

Alberta permits sports betting through its provincial lottery system and through licensed sportsbooks. Residents can access CFL odds during the regular season and playoffs through approved platforms.

Saskatchewan operates through its provincial gaming authority. Residents can place bets on CFL games, including those involving the Saskatchewan Roughriders, through authorized channels.

Both provinces require bettors to be 19 or older.

Betting Types Available for CFL Games

Most provincial platforms offer standard bet types for CFL matchups. Moneylines let you pick the winner of a game without a point spread. Point spreads set a margin that the favored team must cover. Totals ask you to bet on the combined score going over or under a set number.

Some platforms offer player props, futures on Grey Cup winners, and live betting during games. Availability depends on the province and the specific operator.

Conclusion

CFL betting is legal in every Canadian province, but the rules and platforms vary. Ontario has the most options with dozens of licensed operators. BC, Manitoba, and Quebec each run single platforms through their lottery corporations. Atlantic Canada shares Pro•Line across four provinces. Alberta and Saskatchewan permit betting through their provincial systems.

Check your province’s legal betting age before placing wagers. Quebec allows betting at 18, while everyone else requires 19. Know which platforms are licensed in your area, and confirm that your chosen operator holds proper authorization before depositing money.
