CFL Week 2 Quarterback Rankings; Vernon Adams Impresses

Another CFL season is in full swing. Week 1 has come and gone. Enjoy our week 2 Quarterback Rankings.

These rankings can also help give you an edge in CFL fantasy football. Week 1 is over but It’s not too late to start a CFL head-to-head fantasy football league with your friends and draft your teams to compete against each for the rest of the CFL season. Our friends at 110yards.ca are able to accommodate a CFL fantasy football league starting mid-season.

1. Zach Collaros, Winnipeg Blue Bombers, Previous Ranking #QB1

Zach Collaros had the best day among quarterbacks in week 1. The back-to-back Most Outstanding Player completed 21 of his 30 passes for 354 yards and 3 touchdowns all of which came in the first quarter. Collaros did have a fumble on a broken play that led to a defensive touchdown for Hamilton but otherwise, it was a near-perfect night.

2. Cody Fajardo, Montreal Alouettes, Previous Ranking #QB2

Cody Fajardo had the 2nd highest QBR among quarterbacks in week 1 at 109.4 and completed 14 of his 21 passes for 261 yards. He had the third most yards week despite attempting the least amount of passes. He threw no touchdowns or interceptions but played a pretty good game in which Montreal’s offense was able to put together some nice drives despite the rushing game only averaging 2.9 yards per attempt. Montreal had a good passing game despite missing some big names at receiver on the injury list such as Greg Ellingson and Tyson Philpot. Fajardo added 15 yards rushing on 5 carries and a touchdown. Fajardo throughout his career consistently adds significant rushing yards every season and I expect this to become a big factor in games in the near future.

3. Vernon Adams Jr., BC Lions, Previous Ranking #QB8

Vernon Adams had the third-highest QBR in week 1 at 107.8. He also had the highest completion percentage at 77.1% as he threw 27 for 35 and 288 yards. He had 2 touchdowns and 1 interception. VA also added 35 yards on 10 rushes and a touchdown. The passing game in week 1 looked pretty good in the first game in the post Nathan Rourke era. Vernon Adams and Dominique Rhymes who had 2 touchdowns and over 100 yards showed they are a duo to be taken very seriously by defenses.

4. Bo Levi Mitchell, Hamilton Tiger-Cats, Previous Ranking #QB4

Bo Levi Mitchell opened the season with a disappointing first game as a Hamilton Tiger-Cat. He completed just 17 of his 33 passes throwing for 1 touchdown and 2 interceptions. Multiple times against Winnipeg he was overthrowing open receivers by a stride or 2 for what could have been massive plays. Sometimes it can take time for a quarterback to get in a groove with a new offense and receiving group. Those plays that people pointed to during which he was overthrowing receivers could be the leadup to a dangerous offense once BLM fine-tunes his guitar and gets in rhythm with the rest of the band. The 33-year-old is still the winningest QB in CFL history after all.

5. Taylor Cornelius, Edmonton Elks, Previous Ranking #QB3

At a glance, Taylor Cornelius appeared to have an ok opening as he was 4th in passing yards out of the 8 quarterbacks who played this weekend. He threw for 13 of 25 for 202 yards and a touchdown. He did also throw 1 interception. Elks fans had a real treat as offseason addition Euguene Lewis had a 99-yard reception that he essentially took away from the defender’s hands as the defender went down to the ground before going for a joyful jot down the rest of the field for a touchdown. At times General Cornelius looked more like General Corn in the home opener. Edmonton often went 2 and out as the offense struggled to get going. If you take away the 99-yard touchdown there were only 103 passing yards. Cornelius is a passer who really adds a lot with his mobility charging downfield. He had 1 rush for 14 yards in week 1. He was on pace last year for over 4,000 yards last season in a full season so I do believe there is still potential despite an uninspiring performance in week 1.

6. Jeremiah Masoli, Ottawa Redblacks, Previous Ranking #QB6

Jeremiah Masoli is not going to play in the first 2 games as he is still getting back into the swing of things following a season-ending injury early in the season last year. He threw for 711 yards in the first 2 games last year which were both against the best pass defense in the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. The last time he played a full season he threw 5,200 yards in 2018.

7. Chad Kelly, Toronto Argonauts, Previous Ranking #QB7

The Toronto Argonauts were on a bye in week 1 so nothing new to report on. Kelly has a Grey Cup to his name in which he was essential in Toronto’s comeback win against Winnipeg. He only has 1 start to his name in which he put up good numbers with 264 yards, 2 touchdowns, and an additional 35 rushing yards and a rushing touchdown. His only start was in a game where both teams were starting a lot of their backups in the last game of the season as the playoff seeds were already set.

8. Jake Maier, Calgary Stampeders, Previous Ranking #QB5

Calgary had a sad home opener as Jake Maier threw the least passing yards among CFL quarterbacks this week despite the fact he threw the most passes. He threw 20 of 36 for 166 yards with 1 touchdown and 1 interception. This is his first season in which he begins the season as a starter so perhaps there are some heightened nerves. Hopefully, now that the first game is out of the way he can settle back into his rhythm. Last year he averaged 263 passing yards per start and was quite efficient so I do expect him to bounce back.

9. Trevor Harris, Saskatchewan Roughriders, Previous Ranking #QB9

In Saskatchewan’s opening win against Edmonton, both offenses were rather inspiring as both teams often went 2 and out. The busiest players were the punters as the game had the most punts of any game with 16. Harris completed 20 of 33 passes for 179 with 1 touchdown and 2 interceptions. The big concern for Saskatchewan last year was the fact that they gave up by far the most sacks. In week 1 they only gave up 2 sacks. I will need to see more pass protection before I become a believer in bringing in a pocket passer to a team with questionable pass protection. Harris did have an impressive 19-yard run showing speed that many didn’t know he had. Seeing a 179-yard passing day in a win for Trevor Harris is not the most significant achievement as they extended Edmonton’s at-home losing streak to 18.

10. Nick Arbuckle, Ottawa Redblacks, Previous Ranking Unranked

I say this as someone who believes in Nick Arbuckle as a quarterback, Nick Arbuckle played terribly against Montreal. He completed 19 of 35 for 176 yards and 3 interceptions. He had by far the worst QBR with 32.6. You don’t need to see the numbers to know he played badly if you watched this game. However, I do feel that his poor quarterback play is correctible and possibly attributed to week 1 nerves as the QB1 during Masoli’s absence. He played with bad footwork and was leaning away from his throws. If Nick Arbuckles simply steps into his throws rather than leaning away you will think he had a magical transformation with the contrast of what he was in week 1 to what he can be.

Fajardo is taking too many sacks again, and he only had one really good pass during the win over Ottawa. Vernon Adams Jr. should be in the number #2 spot.
