CFL Week 6: Edmonton Elks (1-3) vs. B.C. Lions (2-3) Preview / Prediction.

Week 6 for the Edmonton Elks will be at home when they have a date with the BC Lions in a West Division battle. Playing games in your division is the most important thing to win, regardless of the league you’re in.  Both teams have been experiencing problems on offence and defence at times this season. Something has got to give in week 6 with both teams. Edmonton is averaging 26 points per game with points for, followed by 34.5 points allowed. In the case of B.C., they are averaging only 20.8 points per game scored, followed by 26.4 points allowed.

So, what it comes down to is that both teams are at least on record, having issues on both sides of the ball.

On a positive note, Edmonton finally got its first win of the season last week when it defeated Ottawa. With a win under their belt, Edmonton can use this as motivation when they encounter another struggling team in the form of B.C.

Edmonton Elks Injury Report

Edmonton has had a small injury report this season, and the same will apply in week 6. DL Robbie Smith (Elbow) will be out, along with LB Eteva Mauga Clements (Knee) and RB Zander Horvath (Hand).

B.C Lions Injury Report

B.C., on the other hand, has an extensive list with many roster players listed as available. However, LB Adam Auclair (Ankle) will be out. OL Michael Couture (Hand) will be out. DL Tibo Debaille (Ankle) will be out.

Players to Watch: Edmonton Elks

RB – Justin Rankin

Justin Rankin had a breakout day in week 5 when they got their first win of the season against Ottawa. He was very effective with the Edmonton offence in the run and the receiving department. With B.C. struggling on the defence, Justin Rankin can make it a long day for B.C. with his dual-threat talents.

QB – Tre Ford

Tre Ford could achieve a 300-yard-plus passing game tomorrow night. If Tre Ford can get into a balanced offensive attack, he could do a lot of damage to B.C.

Players to Watch: B.C. Lions

QB – Nathan Rourke

Everybody in the CFL knows that Nathan Rourke can be a game-changer week in and week out. With Edmonton being exposed in the secondary, Nathan Rourke will take full advantage if there are a lot of repeat miscues by Edmonton.

LB – Micah Awe

There are only positives when describing Micah Awe. He is a leader who leads by example. Moreover, he is one of the hardest hitters in the CFL. Edmonton will have to keep a close eye on where he is on the field. Because when he unloads on someone, that player will feel it.

Keys to an Edmonton Victory:

The defensive secondary has to play a tight game.

It’s a complex duty to pressure Nathan Rourke for a good part of the game. With that said, if the secondary can buy time and play tight coverage, it will only benefit Edmoton to force Nathan Rourke to toss the ball away, flush him out of the pocket, and possibly force the ball into dangerous areas of the field.

Pound the ball.

By gaining confidence last week, it will be vital for Edmonton to excel as much as possible in the running game. If they can be successful overall with approximately 30 – 35 attempts from the running back department, it will put Edmonton in a good spot for a possible victory.

Protect Tre Ford.

Edmonton should mix up more different looks on the offence to weather the storm if they are experiencing difficulties moving the ball against B.C. They should not be afraid to go with a double-tight end set for more protection or have two running backs in the backfield as another option. Moreover, to have a mix and match of both.

Prediction

This game could go in many directions. It could be a high-scoring game in the mid-to-high 30s for both teams, or it could be a great defensive showdown on both sides in a 20 – 18 game. Do not be surprised if it’s a slow game with few points scored in the first half.

Edmonton: 31

B.C: 27

Edmonton will pull through in week 6 with another victory at home. It will be a game where they fall behind in the mid-2nd quarter to the mid-3rd quarter, but stay within distance of making a short to mid-range comeback.
