Edmonton Elks Strengthen Secondary with Addition of DB James Wiggins

In a move to bolster their defensive backfield, the Edmonton Elks have officially announced the acquisition of American player James Wiggins. The seasoned player is set to join the Elks for the upcoming Canadian Football League season after a stint in the United States Football League (USFL).

Last year, Wiggins took to the field with the New Orleans Breakers, accumulating nine tackles, two picks, and a fumble forced across three appearances. Before his time in the USFL, the 26-year-old Miami, Florida native was chosen by the Arizona Cardinals in the 2021 NFL Draft’s seventh round. His rookie year included contributions mainly on special teams in three games of regular NFL season play.

Wiggins’s NFL journey also saw him involved in short-term engagements with teams such as the Kansas City Chiefs in 2022 and the Green Bay Packers in 2023.

Before elevating to the professional ranks, Wiggins developed his game at the University of Cincinnati from 2017 to 2020. His college career was a fruitful period where he tallied 87 tackles, one quarterback sack, and secured five interceptions over 32 matches. His performance in his senior year earned him a spot as First-Team All-American Athletic Conference and the title of Second-Team All-American by the Associated Press.

With the Edmonton Elks preparing to celebrate their 75th season in the CFL in 2024, adding a player like Wiggins could provide a significant boost to their squad. His previous experiences and solid track record on the field add depth and strength to the Elks’ defensive arsenal, as they look ahead to a landmark season.

Related to this signing, the Elks have also recently signed National Offensive Lineman Patrick Davis. In other league news, the CFL has disclosed the list of 2024 free agents with anticipation building around which players may find new homes or extend their stay with current teams.

As the Elks gear up for their milestone CFL season, fans and analysts alike will be keeping a close eye on how new additions like Wiggins integrate with the team and the impact they will have on the Elks’ performance in the 2024 season.
