Game Preview: BC Lions (6-7) At Calgary Stampeders (8-4)

This week’s game between the BC Lions and the Calgary Stampeders has large ramifications for the West Division standings.

The only thing we know for sure bout the West is that Saskatchewan is in the playoffs. Literally everything else is up for grabs.

With the Lions and the Stamps playing twice in three weeks, we might have a much clearer picture of where each stands in the West soon. Plus, there is an interesting revenge angle that makes this matchup even more interesting.

West Division Standings

The West Division Standings showing the Calgary Stampeders in 2nd and the BC Lions in 4th

The BC Lions currently sit in 4th place in the West, but that could change quickly. If the Lions can win their next three games, that would involve beating Calgary twice. That scenario would flip the standing on its head.

And, with Calgary sitting only 1.5 games behind Saskatchewan, every game counts. They need to take care of business against BC to keep their hopes of a playoff bye week alive.

The Revenge Angle

Acquiring Vernon Adams Jr. was a huge boost to the Calgary Stampeders. Adams fit in for day one and quickly became the team’s unquestioned leader.

But let’s be honest, the only reason he was available is that BC didn’t want him anymore.

Adams is too much of a professional to admit it, but that had to sting a little. And this game probably means a little more to him than a normal game. It’s a game that could potentially provide him with some small measure of revenge.

Calgary Stampeders Players To Watch

The game will most likely come down to how well the BC Lions handle these three players.

Vernon Adams Jr.

Vernon Adams Jr. has been a big-play machine all season. Unfortunately, he’s also proven himself capable of turning the ball over.

For BC to find success, they must avoid giving up big plays while putting pressure on Adams to make mistakes.

Dedrick Mills

Dedrick Mills is the CFL’s 3rd leading rusher so far this season. Unfortunately, he isn’t always super consistent. Mills has had three sub-40-yard games this season.

The games where Mills struggles, the Stampeders’ offense struggles. That should come as no surprise because balance is important for keeping defenses guessing.

BC holding Mills under 40 yards would help their cause tremendously.

Rene Paredes

Rene Paredes has been a Calgary Stampeders mainstay for 13 years now. Unfortunately, he’s struggled a bit at times this season. He’s an uncharacteristic 22/29 on field goals this season.

If the game comes down to the wire, the kicking game just might be the deciding factor. And, so far this season, that factor has favored the BC Lions.
