This is a game of surprise teams. The Calgary Stampeders have surprised the league in a good way so far. Unfortunately, the Ottawa Redblacks, not so much.
But it’s still relatively early in the season, so things can still change for both teams.
It will also be a fun game because it’s a revenge game for Calgary.
First Matchup: Calgary Stampeders vs Ottawa Redblacks
In their first matchup of the year, Ottawa beat Calgary 20-12 in a rainy game.
There were two big advantages for Ottawa in that game.
5 to 0 (turnover advantage for the Redblacks)
239 to 160 (rushing yard advantage for the Redblacks)
Both teams have changed since the first matchup, so it will be interesting to see how this one plays out.
With Adams out, PJ Walker will get his first CFL start. And, he’ll have to do it without two big-time weapons at receiver.
Take care of the ball
Anytime you’re missing your starting QB, your margin of error gets smaller. The team needs to help Walker out in his first start. That means taking care of the ball and not making stupid mistakes.
Run the ball
Dedrick Mills has been amazing all season. He’s rushed for 544 yards and a league-leading 7 touchdowns.
He’ll need to play an even bigger role with all the offensive injuries.
They will need to avoid leaving points on the field if they want to leave Ottawa victorious.
Ottawa Redblacks Keys to Victory
Stop the run
Dedrick Mills is a huge part of the Stampeders’ plan every week. But with them starting their backup QB, he’ll be asked to carry even more of the load.
The Ottawa Redblacks‘ chances of victory go way up if they can contain Mills.
PJ Walker comes into the game with a boatload of playing experience. Unfortunately, virtually all of it comes from outside the CFL.
The Redblacks should take advantage of that fact by getting pressure on Walker early and often. It will be important not to let him get into any sort of rhythm.
