Heading into Week 8 of the 2025 CFL season, most teams are not only preparing to compete against other CFL teams, but they are also battling a “war of attrition.” Often in the CFL, the war of attrition can be a more significant factor in predicting which teams will be successful each week. The Hamilton Tiger-Cats have experienced their share of attrition, and that includes three defensive linemen who come into this week suffering from injuries.
According to the CFL Injured List for Week 8, the Tiger-Cats have three injured defensive linemen, including Isaiah Bagnah, Luke Brubacher, and TyJuan Garbutt. The fastest way to maintain the Tiger-Cats’ defensive front seven’s level of play is to add a defensive lineman who can effectively fill in for the missing players. According to an announcement made on the Hamilton Tiger-Cats X account, Hamilton has signed American defensive lineman Phillip Webb.
Phillip Webb is a 6’5″, 265-pound defensive lineman from Atlanta, Georgia. During the Spring of 2025, the Winnipeg Blue Bombers signed Webb, but they released him after he spent time with the team. Webb comes to Hamilton, giving him a chance to show that he can make an impact along the defensive line in the CFL.
In college, Webb began his football career with LSU in 2021, but after playing in only three games over two seasons, he transferred to Jackson State University. Webb played in 25 games during the 2023 and 2024 seasons at Jackson State. While playing for the Tigers, Webb recorded 63 total tackles, including 35 solo tackles, 16 tackles for loss, six quarterback sacks, two pass deflections, and one fumble recovery.
