Outside of the last game the Bombers have not had much of a passing game with a long ball, so it is welcomed news to both the club and their fans that the Bombers re-signed receiver Ontaria Wilson.
Personally, I thought Wilson might stick around the NFL and look for other opportunities there. Known as a big time receiver and a player that already knows the Bombers system should allow for Wilson to fit in quickly. The one thing he may need to get used to is the Bombers’ new offensive coordinator, Jason Hogan. But Wilson already has chemistry with Collaros and I would expect Wilson to start the Banjo Bowl game.
Couple that with the fact that Schoen looked like he might have got injured in the last play of the Labour Day Classic, Wilson could be a big target in the Banjo Bowl. Here is what Zach has to say about Wilson, “Pokey can play. He can Waggle; he can play on the ball. In the quarterback room we’ve been saying we’ve got to find ways to get this guy the ball. I haven’t seen many guys like him be able to adjust to the football in the air the way he does — Kenny Lawler is probably the best I’ve ever seen at that, and we’ve got Nic (Demski) who does the Willy Mays (over the shoulder catch) better than anybody but Ontaria is very smooth as well. He’s a good football player.”
The Bombers were criticized for not spending to the cap and letting other good players walk – Lawler, maybe the biggest one of them all. And if Lawler was not the biggest name to not be re-signed by the Bombers, it certainly looks that way situationally as the Bombers have lacked that big play/consistent receiver. However, by not spending to the cap the Bombers have allowed themselves room to make signings at this juncture of the season.
While Wilson only scored 3 touchdowns last year, there were a lot of targets for Zach in 2024 that just are not there now.
Final Thoughts One remaining question; can the Bombers offensive line get better? If they do not, either with who the Bombers currently have, or other players the Bombers sign, will Wilson make a difference? The Bombers need to run the ball more; not just because they have the reigning MOP in Brady Oliveira – which is a good enough reason in and of itself. However, without the Bombes running the ball more, other teams do not need to defend against the run. That allows the Bombers’ opponents to pin their ears back, and pass rush without being worried about being beaten by a bug run. As a result, Collaros does not have much time to find receivers open down field; like Wilson.
