Benjie Franklin Newest Argonaut in the Defensive Back Field

The Toronto Argonauts signed Benjie Franklin early in the week, the 12th defensive back they have signed since November.

Early this week the Toronto Argonauts signed defensive back Benjie Franklin.

27-year-old Franklin was signed by the Argos in September but only played one game. In his lone performance Franklin made four tackles and notched an interception and a forced fumble.

Franklin played 29 games for Tarleton State in Texas. In his time there he racked up 8 interceptions and 103 total tackles. He went on to work with the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2022 and the Seattle Seahawks and Green Bay Packers in 2023.

It is presently unclear where Franklin will fit in Torontos rotation. In a busy off-season the Argonauts signed 12 defensive backs. Among those are returning players Maurice Carnell and Jamie Harry. In 2022 Carnell got 4 picks and 1 sack in 9 games for the Argos. He missed sat out 2023 due to injury. Jamie Harry will be entering his 4th season in the league during which he has logged 39 tackles in 27 games played.

The Argos also picked up Kerfalla Exumé from the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. Listed as a defensive back he has primarily been a special teams player. In four seasons -two in Winnipeg, two in Montreal- Exumé totalled 63 special teams tackles in 64 games.

They also signed DB Quincy Mauger who spent the last two seasons with the BC Lions. Mauger managed 66 tackles and 4 sacks in BC with 2 interceptions.

Tunde Adeleke was signed by the Argonauts in February. Adeleke has spent the last five seasons playing for the Tiger-Cats and has nearly 250 career tackles in the CFL. In his seven seasons in the league Adeleke has 5 interceptions and 5 sacks.

The remainder of the many defensive backs signed by Toronto are Americans signing their first CFL contracts. 25-year-old Marquis Waters played 65 games in the NCAA where he had 5 interceptions and 196 solo tackles.  Jordan Jones, 24, got 9 interceptions and 59 solo tackles in 29 games for the University of Rhode Island. Kary Vincent Jr., 25, played 39 games for LSU. In his time playing for Louisiana he recorded 6 interceptions and 60 solo tackles.
