The Hamilton Tiger-Cats missed a crucial opportunity in Week 19 to clinch first place in the East Division and secure a bye for the East semi-finals. Both offensive and defensive struggles led to a 37-20 loss against the Calgary Stampeders.
This isn’t the first time the Tiger-Cats have faced this scenario. Earlier in the season, a loss to Calgary and a 0-2 start prompted a team-wide focus on identity after their bye week. Now, after another defeat by the Stampeders and another bye, head coach Scott Milanovich is again committed to reestablishing that identity.
After their earlier bye week, Hamilton went on a six-game win streak by refocusing. If they adjust similarly now, they could start another streak to secure first place in the East and the important playoff bye. Their next game against the Ottawa Redblacks will determine if they lock up the division and a championship bye, putting them one win from the Grey Cup for the first time since 1999.
Tiger-Cats Moves On From Four Practice Squad Players
The Tiger-Cats routinely release roster personnel who do not pay dividends. To start this bye week, the CFL Transactions list records that the Tiger-Cats released four players from their practice roster: American defensive lineman Calden Woullard, American defensive back Cameron Bergeron, and American running backs Shane Watts and Marcus Yarns.
Throughout the season, Hamilton has responded to injuries at key positions by working to add depth on both sides of the ball. The four released players failed to make a significant enough impact to be added to the active roster and help Hamilton win. Now all four players have the opportunity to look ahead to their next chance to make an impact for a team in the CFL or beyond.
