It was not that long ago that we wondered if Bombers’ Head Coach Mike O’Shea may leave Winnipeg. But as late as Wednesday night it seemed like the question had changed, and the conversation was not if but where?

But not Toronto is not the only team interested in Mike O’Shea. Reports are the that Hamilton is also interested in O’Shea becoming their head coach – source. But mid-Thursday afternoon, TSN reported that “Ticats expected to retain Milanovich as head coach.” “TSN’s Farhan Lalji reported earlier this week that the team had asked the Winnipeg Blue Bombers for permission to speak to head coach Mike O’Shea, as well as assistant general manager Danny McManus, who won a Grey Cup with the team as a quarterback. Naylor notes that the belief is the Ticats’ interest in O’Shea was for a role beyond head coach. The Ticats’ general manager role has been vacant since the death of Ted Goveia in September.”
According to sources, @Ticats managing partner Scott Mitchell and president of football ops Orlondo Steinauer are not speaking to anyone about head coach role. Team remains committed to Scott Milanovich returning as head coach in 2026. #CFL #Ticats

I’m led to believe the @Ticats interest in Mike O’Shea is to see if there is a role for him within their organization beyond head coach. They have had some creative structures for football operations in the past and O’Shea is not the only one with whom they are speaking about…

Has your head stopped spinning? If so, it is clear as mud, but it looks like Toronto is the only team – currently – speaking to Mike O’Shea about becoming their head coach. Now, it is possible that O’Shea entertains the idea of taking on a different role than head coach…but all reports seem to indicate that he is not interested in a different role.
What Happens To The Rest Of The Staff If O’Shea Leaves?
This becomes a very interesting situation. On Bonfire Sports Winnipeg, Farhan Lalji described the Bombers as a “house of cards.” You can pick up the start of that conversation around the 54 minute mark.
Farhan did not expand on what he meant by that, but here are my thoughts. If Mike O’Shea leaves, and the Bombers do not promote their defensive coordinator, Jason Younger, to the head coach role, I could see Mike O’Shea take younger with him. Guaranteed, whoever is courting O’Shea will give him the leeway to build his own staff. Additionally, I see no way that the Bombers offensive coordinator, Jason Hogan is back in any capacity with the Bombers. So that would leave vacancies in the head coach, defensive coordinator, and offensive coordinator positions. Bomber fans that wanted some changes…probably did not want that many changes.
All That Came To An End
Yet, all that speculation came to an end late Friday afternoon. (Granted, I missed the social media post at I was at Touchdown Manitoba.) But there, myself and a few fans saw Bombers’ President and CEO, Wade Miller. One fan commented to me, “That looks like a GM with no head coach next year.” Low and behold, under an hour later and the Bombers came out with this announcement.

As the story develops, we will have more details.
