BC Lions Legend Tom Brown Passes Away at 89

On 12 March 2026, the sad news was announced that former BC Lions lineman and Canadian Football Hall of Fame inductee Tom Brown had passed away at the age of 89. Playing over 100 games for the Lions between 1961 and 1967, Brown belonged to a bygone era of hard-nosed football – a time when football news broke on the airwaves rather than online and CFL Betting Apps for iOS and Android were the stuff of science fiction. His loss gives fans pause to remember a man who helped take the Lions to their first championship.

Forged in Minnesota

Born in Minnesota on 5 December 1936, Tom Brown played his college football for the Minnesota Golden Gophers. In winning the Outland Trophy for the nation’s best lineman in 1960, he helped the Golden Gophers to the National College Title that year.

Before the Gophers’ title success, Brown was selected in the ninth round of the 1959 draft by the Baltimore Colts of the NFL. On the back of his stellar season, he was then taken with the second overall pick by the New York Titans of the AFL in 1961.

In 1960, Brown also finished as runner-up behind Joe Bellino for the Heisman Trophy – a remarkable achievement for a player at his position.

Despite being courted by the Colts and Titans, Brown chose to head across the border to join the BC Lions of the CFL.

Big Hit in British Columbia

Making his Lions debut in 1961, Brown became a key cog in the feared defensive machine known as the “Head Hunters”. By 1963, he was helping the Lions roar to the Grey Cup, only to come up short in a 21–10 loss at the hands of the Hamilton Tiger-Cats.

In 1964, the Lions would not be denied. The Tiger-Cats once again lay in wait in the Grey Cup, but this time Brown and the Lions gained their revenge in a 34–24 triumph. Having joined the Lions at a time when they were still establishing themselves in the league, Brown helped propel the franchise to its first title.

Brown sustained a neck injury during the 1965 season, which he then aggravated at a 1966 training camp. Unable to recover enough to continue his career, he retired in 1967, having made 103 appearances for the Lions (97 regular season, 6 playoffs).

Tom Brown, the Award Winner

During his time in Vancouver, Brown became one of the most dominant linemen in the league. He made the Western All-Star Team and All-Canadian Team every year between 1961 and 1963. Further recognition of his considerable talent arrived with a string of awards:

  • All-Western Linebacker: 1962, 1963
  • All-Canadian Linebacker: 1962, 1963
  • Schenley Award for Most Outstanding Lineman: 1963, 1964 (first Lion to win this award)
  • All-Western Middle Guard: 1964
  • All-Canadian Middle Guard: 1964
  • Jeff Nicklin Memorial Trophy: 1964

Into the Hall of Fame

Brown was inducted into the Canadian Football Hall of Fame in 1984, the BC Sports Hall of Fame in 1986, and the College Football Hall of Fame in 2003.

Forever part of the Lions’ history, he was a charter member of the BC Lions Wall of Fame in 2003.

Tributes Pour In

The news of Brown’s death was met with an outpouring of tributes from around the game. Lions Director of Community Partnerships Jamie Taras was among those honouring his legacy, stating,“In addition to being one of the best defensive players in our team’s history, Tom played a major role in helping the BC Lions take the next step in becoming champions.”
